ADHD Assessment and Treatment
I am a registered psychologist and certified school psychologist working with children, adolescents, adults and their families to overcoming the difficulties of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). My experience in the field includes working for several years as a teacher of special education, providing clinical assessment and intervention services as a school and clinical psychologist and several years working as a community based neuro-psychologist for Gentiva Corporation/Rehab Without Walls, focusing on the development of intervention plans for individuals with TBI, head injury, stroke and related deficits. My most recent training has been clinical training with Dr. Mel Levine at the University of North Carolina as part of the Schools Attuned and Minds of All Kinds program. Treatment usually consists of a initial diagnostic assessment, a medical examination, sometimes an evaluation by an occupational therapist before we design a specific treatment intervention program to meet your needs. We also provide complete psycho-educational, neuro-psychological and neuro-developmental assessments. Many parents have questions about medication versus other treatment approaches. Many also come seeking information about "new" or "alternative" treatments. Many of these treatments have little scientific validity, many have been flatly disproven. Rather than referring to the popular press I suggest reading the books and research of Dr. Russell Barkley, the leading authority in the field. His site is located at: http://www.russellbarkley.org/ and numerous books and power point presentations are available there. There is more about Dr. Barkley below. In my clinic we use Dr. Barkley's books, treatment procedures and have numerous DVD training programs available to parents and adults. Below is more information on ADHD treatment, medication and diagnosis:

About ADHD TreatmentDr. Barkley has written about the various treatments that do not have a sound scientific basis for use in ADHD or that have been disproven in research. These include diet or nutrition treatments or diet supplements for ADHD, health food or homeopathy, sensory integration therapy (usually provided under occupational therapy or physical therapy), chiropractic treatment, EEG biofeedback, neurofeedback, or neurotherapy, cognitive or cognitive-behavioral training, or alternative treatments. One of his recent research reviews on EEG and its use in biofeedback appears on this site under Research to Read. Click the following to read one such article: (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISW/is_243/ai_109946513 ) Dr. Barkley's research and writing on assessment methods for ADHD have included subjects such as clinical interviews, behavior rating scales (like the Child Behavior Checklist ® , sometimes called the CBCL, or the Behavioral Assessment System for Children ® , or BASC or BASC-2, Conners rating scales), direct behavioral observation methods, psychological tests, intelligence tests, tests of executive functioning or other neuropsychological tests, continuous performance tests (such as the Gordon Diagnostic System ® , Conners CPT ® , or Test of Variables of Attention ® or TOVA), and academic achievement tests. What is important is that you make treatment choices based upon independent peer juried studies, we call this evidence based practice (for more about EBP click here), and not based your choice of treatment upon anecdotal statements, newspaper articles, patient testimonials (never a good or ethical behaviour on the part of the provider) or upon promises and guarantees of success. No provide should be afraid of a second opinion or of your questions. The truth is, no treatment works in all cases, and your treatment provider should make this clear to you. For more on Dr. Barkley's research and writing, see his list of publications, or books and videos, in his site directory. A number of Dr. Barkley's articles can be read there under Research to Read in the directory. Additionally some of Dr. Barkley's books can be purchased there while others are available through other web sites such as Guilford Publications, the ADD Warehouse, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble. The books I suggest to you and would be used in our treatment can be found on my web site. click HERE. Dr. Barkley's research and opinions on ADHD have also been cited in various newspapers and news magazines such as Newsweek or MSNBC, Time, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, WasingtonPost, Scientific American, the New Yorker, Cosmopolitan, and Parents magazine, to name a few. Interviews with him have appeared on web sites such as WebMD, ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, Marketplace on the Canadian Broadcasting Company web site, or CBC, and Children and Adults with ADD, or CHADD. For more on Dr. Barkley's professional accomplishments, see About Dr. Barkley in his site directory.
