Cogmed Working Memory Training

Cogmed Working Memory Training is an evidence-based, computerized training program designed by leading neuroscientists to increase "working memory" capacity. Working Memory is the ability to keep information in your mind for several seconds, manipulate it, and use it in your thinking. It is central to concentration, problem solving, and impulse control, and is a strong indicator of academic success.

While Cogmed is not an ADHD specific intervention, often individuals with ADHD have significant weaknesses in working memory, and without addressing this critical and fundamental issue it is difficult to overcome ADHD. Before recommending Cogmed training I provide specific testing to see if working memory deficits are an issue in your ADHD. What I can say is that Cogmed is well supported by research and has shown to be associated with measurable, long lasting changes in working memory in about 80% of people who complete the program.

What does Cogmed Training look like?

Cogmed training involves 25 sessions of 30-40 minutes each, done over 5 weeks with the support of a Cogmed coach. It can be done at home, school, or in my office. We often start with an in-office session to demonstrate how the program and procedures work. Every week we discuss the results and developments with the client and parent (if applicable) in a coaching session. This is sometimes done in office, sometimes by phone or through a SKYPE session. Progress is evaluated at the end of the 5 weeks and again, 3-6 months after the sessions have ended.
