Doing things WITH your child, rather than just TOO them.

Parents often come in with some basic questions about child and adolescent behaviour. I often suggest a child behaviour book that is science based: David Barkley’s “Your Defiant Teen,” or “Your Defiant Child.” Both of these books start, as do most parenting programs that are based upon science rather than “philosophy” with a section on simply observing your child, and then providing them with positive reinforcement… being nice. I know it’s a little confusing, but honestly, with most kids who have become non-compliant and are behavioural problems we are faced with two issues: How do I get compliance…and how do I change our relationship. Behaviourally we are able to teach you skills and techniques that will help you change -reduce- negative behaviours, and increase positive behaviours. But parents are often at a loss as to what to do WITH their child rather than TOO him or her. These book might appear to you. Because, even with all the behavioural interventions we have, you still need to be your child’s friend. (There’s also a web page!)
