Treatment for Anxiety, Stress, Pain and PTSD relating to Accidents and other Traumatic Events
I provide assessment and treatment programs relating to anxiety, stress, pain and PTSD to patients who have experienced psychological or physical trauma. Services are available in both the Vancouver and Burnaby offices. The Burnaby office is located at Lougheed Mall and is easily reached from New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and Maple Ridge. These services include:
Forensic Assessments / Independent Medical Exams (IME)
Assessment services including cognitive, educational and personality, pain tolerance and pain attitude assessments, neuropsychological assessments of cognitive ability, concentration and assessments for validity and malingering when requested. Neuropsychological assessments are also provided for those who have experienced head injuries (TBI) or exhibit related frontal /executive dysfunctions such as impulsiveness, anger and emotional instability after a head injury. Usually forensic or legal related assessment procedures are arranged through your lawyer. This includes Independent Medical Examinations. This procedure helps further protect the results of any assessment you might take part in, and I would advise you to discuss this with your lawyer prior to undertaking such an examination.
Chronic Pain and PTSD Assessment
Pain assessments include cognitive, personality and daily living/adaptive behaviour assessments using standardized normed based tools. This includes assessments of chronic pain coping skills and pain attitude surveys. PTSD is assessed through clinical history, assessment tools used to rule out other possible causes and PTSD specific tools such as the Trauma Symptom Inventory(TSI) in addition to general personality assessment procedures and tools. These assessments are designed to help us understand how you react to pain, how you experience it and how we can best help you deal with chronic pain, anxiety and intrusive thoughts which might be the result of an accident or other similar traumatic event. Again, if you are involved in any type of legal situation you should arrange for any forensic or Independent Medical Examination through your legal counsel.
Chronic Pain and PTSD (Trauma) Treatment
We provide individualized treatment which incorporates evidence based interventions such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), psycho-educational training, cognitive restructuring, skills for dealing with automatic thoughts and pain, progressive muscle relaxation and visualization training, stress management, time-based pacing programs, activity scheduling, anger management, sleep hygiene and relapse prevention through cognitive based mindfulness training (CBMT). When appropriate we also provide exposure therapy and other behavioural interventions aimed at getting you back to work, back to life and back to being yourself as much as possible. This is usually part of a time limited eight to ten week course of treatment, including the initial assessment.
